Slack – Communication for classes

Previously we have used Facebook Groups, to make it possible for members on the same team to communicate with each other.
But this has several disadvantages:

  • It requires our members to be on Facebook, to receive notices and recap videos and what not.
  • It nudges people to stay on Facebook.
  • It is a wall – and not a chat. So people can make posts, but it doesn’t really make members interact with each other.
  • And also, since Facebook doesn’t make it possible to create these groups programmatically, then it means that the board spends an annoying amount of time, creating groups and adding, and approving members.

Alternative options

We did a bunch of research – and the only other applications, where we could automate the groups and such was:

  • Slack
  • Telegram

I know some of you guys might be thinking: Signal and WhatsApp and Threema and Oase and all kinds of other apps. But they don’t make it possible to automate creating and assigning people to these groups.

Of these two options, we landed on trying out Slack.

How we will use Slack

It means that you will receive an invitation to join SwingShoes’ Slack-account, within long.
We hoped to get it done before 2026 round 2 started, but we didn’t finish it. It will come very soon.

We will also invite to a: ‘How to use Slack’-event on a Monday before classes, for those who wish to get a little help, getting up and running.

The plan is to create a channel for each class on Slack, that your email will get added to, when you sign up for the class.

And remember… It is optional. Just like, that the Facebook group was optional.

When Slack is up and running, we’ll try to figure out, how to use Slack, so it fits into everyones daily life.
