Description

Welcome to Intermediate & Up with Ariane and Jan!

This Pure & BalSwing class is for dancers who want to deepen their musical understanding, expand
their personal dance vocabulary, improve dynamics and flow, and explore how each dancer can
actively contribute to shared creativity in a responsive partnership.

This class is for you if:

  • You know the fundamental Balboa figures such as tossouts, lollies, outandins, popturn,
swivels and some variations, as well as PureBal up and downhold rhythms. You can
comfortably dance at tempos between 170200 bpm.
  • You have been dancing Balboa for about one year.
  • You also have experience in other swing dances such as Lindy Hop or Blues

We will work on

Musicality

Learn how to recognize and use moments in the music that invite play and variation to create a
dialogue between dance partners. Swing music is rich, dynamic, and full of changing moods. We’ll
explore how to connect more deeply with these shifts and express phrasing, dynamics, and musicality
throughout a song.

Open and closed concepts

We begin with the open concept, where followers are encouraged to express their creativity, while
leaders learn how to support, frame, and guide the dance without limiting expressions. Together, we
work on maintaining flow, musical structure, and connection.
Our goal is a balanced dancing where both partners actively listen and respond in a shared
conversation.

Technique, Posture & Connection

We focus on physical technique and body awareness to create ease, clarity, and connection.
A guiding metaphor is: the head is mindful, the upper body is a blues party, and the lower body is at a
teenage party.
The pulse is subtle, but it should always be felt. Learn how to connect more clearly to yourself, your
partner, and the music.

More Complex Shapes & Figures in

Pure-Bal: Expand your rhythmic vocabulary in Pure-Bal footwork. Explore shapes inspired by the old-
timers and smooth transitions between them.
Bal-Swing: We will work on pivots, turns and double spins, sways and send-outs; arm-, slide-catch
and roll variations, as well as drags, swivels, skip-ups, reverse toss-outs. We’ll also explore locksteps,
in-and-out variations with syncopations, and counterclockwise figures to support balance and avoid
dizziness.
