How did you start dancing?
One of my best friends tricked me into going to a Lindy Hop class because she was really into it. I had never seen the dance before or even looked it up, but she convinced me it would be fun, so I went… But when I arrived, she said, “I have to go” and left, and I stayed… and I don’t think I will ever leave!
What do you love most about teaching?
This is a tough one, since I’ve only just started teaching. But, from my short experience so far, I think what I love most is seeing people evolving and growing together and letting out their real selves on the dance floor.
What does swing dancing mean to you?
For me, Lindy Hop is a place where I can laugh, smile, and be completely myself. It’s my peaceful spot. It’s also where I meet friends and share a good laugh with someone I’ve just met.
What’s your favourite jazz song or artist?
I don’t think I have one favourite, but I love “King of the Swingers” by The Swing Ninjas. It’s such a groovy song. It gives me this nostalgic, cartoon-like feeling I had as a kid discovering swing music for the first time. When the rhythm of the song is mixed with the feeling of being a kid again… It’s an explosion of feelings. My body takes over, and I can’t stop myself from dancing!
Fun fact or secret talent?
I enjoy learning and trying new things. Lately, I’ve started learning Japanese, and in the past, I did some theatre and a bit of stand-up. I guess it all connects to a deeper desire to become a better communicator, and maybe to entertain people, too.
