How did you start dancing?
A few of my friends from university had danced Lindy Hop in the past, so when my girlfriend and I were talking about starting some dancing we decided to give it a try. From a very awkward start I got more and more into it over the course of a year's time until I was completely hooked.
What do you love most about teaching?
I really like working for a longer time on a few specific topics until you feel you can break them down for the students in a clear way. Especially as a slow learner myself I love trying to help people get over hurdles that I also encountered in my own dancing. Also, it is just a lot of fun to spend time with the students who tend to be very kind and insightful.
What does swing dancing mean to you?
To me, Lindy Hop is about connecting with another person and sharing ideas. One of the greatest feelings when dancing is when you feel that your partner appreciates your idea and counters with another which plays off of the first one. In my normal life, that kind of thing tends to be very cerebral and to me, Lindy Hop is about experiencing that feeling in a more intuitive, embodied way.
What’s your favourite jazz song or artist?
Right now, I would say "Pickin' the Cabbage" by Cab Calloway. I really like it when a song is saying something clear and unusual and I think this song in particular has a very sneaky and cheeky vibe which I love.
Fun fact or secret talent?
I am a moderately competent juggler and I used to be president of my university juggling club :)
