How did you start dancing?

I was 17 and thought I was way too cool for whatever my parents were into. Then I saw my mum dancing at her 40th birthday party. The swing music, the women in swirling dresses, the way they moved across the floor — and everyone was smiling. I was completely caught off guard by how joyful and alive it all felt. I signed up for a dance class the following week and haven’t looked back since.

What do you love most about teaching?

“My” students! I love watching their journey — the growth, the laughter, the friendships forming. Seeing people have fun while learning, building confidence, and gradually finding their own style is incredibly rewarding. It’s a privilege to be part of that process.

What does swing dancing mean to you?

Everything! It has healed me more than once, helped me grow, and taught me to listen and connect to my body in new ways. And it's given me a social life full of warmth, laughter, and connection. I honestly can’t imagine my life without it.

What’s your favourite jazz song or artist?

I have a million favourites, and they change from DJ set to DJ set. That said — anyone who knows me knows that Ella Fitzgerald is my girl! And Shiny Stockings is my song. I’ve been DJ’ing for over 20 years, and that tune still makes me smile — and sing at the top of my lungs — every single time.

Fun fact or secret talent?

I’ve danced both lead and follow since day one — which was almost 27 years ago (yes, I’m giving away my age). My very first partner was my mum… and she’s still my favourite. Everyone should have the pleasure of dancing with her.
