How did you start dancing?
I was struggling with my last year of bachelor and I really wanted to do something connected to music. I asked my girlfriend at the time to join me for a Tango class, but she thought it was boring so she proposed Lindy Hop. I always loved jazz, so naturally I said yes, and I completely became obsessed with the dance, the music and the community. We broke up in the end.
What do you love most about teaching?
I always developed strong bonds with my teachers as I was feeling they were entrusting to me their passion, their love and their knowledge. I love to teach thinking that I'm always sharing a part of myself, a piece of ever evolving knowledge that doesn't die in class but rather is carried by my students along their journey.
What does swing dancing mean to you?
Through Lindy hop I feel I can express myself fully. I feel I can be part of the music and part of a community without boundaries. Today I'm in Copenhagen, but tomorrow I might be in New Zealand, just to find the local Lindy Hop community and feel welcome on the other side of the planet. Lindy hop to me also means authenticity and to get accepted for what you are.
What’s your favourite jazz song or artist?
My favourite artist is Billie Holiday. Incredible performer and basically a jazz genius for her natural talent, She lived a very hard life, something you can really feel listening to her songs and music. Within those moving blue notes I see all the sides of humanity, the strength she had, but also her fragility, and that always gets me.
