Terminology

There are a lot of ‘dancing lingo’ thrown around. And it’s not always intuitive to other people, what is what. So this page aims to explain the different terms.

Social dance / Social dancing

Free dancing, that you can just show up to and dance. You don’t arrive with a partner or anything (necessarily). You just ask “would you like to dance” to a complete stranger and thereby get dances. You’re obviously also able to just dance alone (solo jazz).

Taster

This is always free – and unless something else is mentioned, then it is always ‘drop in’, which means that you just show up and join. Tasters usually takes 1 hour, – and is usually something that allows all levels to participate.

Workshop

This can be everything from 1 hour, to 3-4 hours. You almost always have to sign up for a workshop, beforehand. It is often targeted a certain level or something.

Dance class / Dance course

A dance class and a dance course is the same, and it’s used interchangably. It is ‘weekly lessons’, falling on the same weekly day.

Dance lesson

A single lesson, as part of a dance class.

Dance round

At SwingShoes we have 5 dance rounds over the year. They usually span 8 weeks, but it can be 7 and it can be 9, depending on what fits the calendar.
